Water Quality Management
Under Section 604(b) of the federal Clean Water Act, Greater Egypt is contracted by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to implement three programs: development of watershed-based planning, coordination of the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP), and developing programs and educational materials for nonpoint source pollution awareness.
Watershed-based Planning
Greater Egypt develops watershed-based plans that are designed to improve water quality by reducing nonpoint source pollution. These plans involve partnerships from various entities to propose management measures to improve water quality.
Nonpoint Source Pollution Planning
Nonpoint Source Pollution Planning
Nutrient Assessment Reduction Planning (NARP)
To fulfil requirements laid out in NPDES Permits for certain municipal wastewater treatment plants, a NARP must be prepared and approved by the IEPA.
Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program (VLMP)
Greater Egypt coordinates the Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program for the fifteen-county region of: Alexander, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union and Williamson. The program recruits volunteers to monitor lakes throughout Illinois using various means.
Stormwater Management and Education
Stormwater runoff affects all of our municipalities. It occurs when precipitation is transported over areas into our storm sewers, and ending up in waterways. This runoff carries contaminants such as nutrients, litter, and other chemicals that can pollute our surface water.
